1. Appointment of a second Editor-in-Chief
It is with great excitement that I announce our second Editor-in-Chief for the North African Journal of Food and Nutrition Research (NAJFNR): I am delighted that Professor Mustapha Diaf has agreed to take up this appointment effective August 1, 2023. "I am excited to work with Mustapha, a talented teammate, and to see how his vision helps the journal reach even greater heights of excellence and high standards.”
M. Diaf,
Mustapha was born in Sidi-Bel-Abbès, Algeria in 1983. Currently he is a teaching-researcher who obtained his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, specializing in Food and Human Nutrition, in 2015 under the guidance of Pr. Khaled Méghit Boumediene. Affiliated with Djillali LIABES University of Sidi-Bel-Abbès, he embarked on his teaching-research career in 2012 and was promoted full Professor in 2022. His research covers a diverse spectrum, spanning human nutrition, metabolic pathologies, and biostatistics. He is particularly impassioned about investigating the dietary behaviors of individuals across various life stages, acknowledging the substantial implications of these habits on long-term well-being. Within the Lab-NUPABS laboratory, DIAF Mustapha leads the NUMEP team. He contributes as a reviewer and editorial team member for esteemed journals. Since 2017, he has served as the editor manager of the NAJFNR journal, underscoring his commitment to elevating quality in food and nutrition research.
Mustapha, a formal founder of the NAJFNR, has served as managing editor and has been closely involved in the journal’s activities since its inception as an author, a reviewer and an editorial member. Furthermore, he helped set the Journal on the right path and promotion.
2. Appointment of new Deputy Executive Editors-in-Chief
On behalf of the Editorial Board, journal Editors, and staff of the North African Journal of Food and Nutrition Research (NAJFNR), I am pleased to announce that Professor Hajer Debbabi, Professor Farid Dahmoune, Doctor Nada Benajiba, and Dr. Basil H Aboul-Enein have agreed to serve as the Deputy Executive Editor-in-Chief for a three-year term effective August 1, 2023.
As the former Associate Section-Editors Pr. Debbabi, Pr. Dahmoune, Dr. Nada Benajiba, and Dr. Basil H. Aboul-Enein have long been a dedicated supporter of the NAJFNR. In their capacity as Deputy Executive Editor-in-Chief, Debbabi, Dahmoune, Benajiba and Aboul-Enein will:

- Support the Editors-in-Chief in their duties by providing advice, recommending or assessing potential editorial appointments, contributing to the strategic development of the journals, and representing the Executive Editor-in-Chief at events as needed;
- Uphold the ethics and values associated with scholarly publishing;
- Promote the NAJFNR, working to develop and maintain its high-quality reputation;
- Lead various special projects and activities that support the above responsibilities or that contribute to the advancement of the NAJFNR strategic goals or to the scholarly community in general.
H. Debbabi,
Hajer Debbabi was born in Paris, France in 1968. She received her B.S. degree in biochemistry from University of Paris 7-Denis Diderot, France in 1992, and has been the recipient of Jean Marie Dubert awards. She received her Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, food sciences from University of Paris 7-Denis Diderot, France, in 1997. Her thesis work, under the guidance of Pr. Daniel Tomé in AgroParisTec, aimed at characterizing physiological properties of bovine lactoferrin, in order to use this milk protein as a bioactive ompound in functional foods. Hajer Debbabi was a post-doctoral fellow at Dartmouth College, USA, from 1998-2000, and at Harvard University, USA, from 2001-2003. In 2003, she became an Assistant Professor in Food Sciences in the Department of Food Technology, National Institute of Agronomy of Tunisia (INAT), Tunisia. She was promoted to Full Professor in Food Sciences in 2020.
Since 2012, she is involved in teaching online courses in quality of food products (Master level), in collaboration with the “Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie”. Her research interests are related to Sustainable Food, specifically: development of functional foods as well as food waste reduction.
Debbabi is the author of 70 papers in international scientific journals, and is involved in national (MERS; MARHP) and international research (ENPI /CBCMED; PRIMA) projects.
F. Dahmoune,
Farid Dahmoune was born in Bejaia, Algeria in 1984. He received his B.S. degree in Food and Instrumental Analysis from University of Bejaia, Algeria in 2007. In 2009 he obtained his Master degree in Food Science from the same university. Dahmoune received his Ph.D. degree in Food sciences in 2014 under the supervision of Pr. Khodir Madani.
He became an Assistant Professor in Akli Mohand Ouelhadj University of Bouira, Algeria in 2014. In 2016 he became an Associate Professor in Food sciences. In 2021 Dahmoune was promoted full Professor.
His research interests include: Engineering Optimization, Conventional/Non-Conventional Extraction, Antioxidant Activities. DAHMOUNE Farid is an author of 52 International Journal Papers powered by scopus with an h-index of 19. He served as review editor in several journals; Food Chemistry, Journal of Industrial Crops and Products, and The North African Journal of Food and Nutrition Research.
B. H. Aboul-Enein
Dr. Basil Aboul-Enein attended the University of Central Arkansas receiving his Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology. He received his dual Master degrees in Nutrition and Public Health from Texas Woman’s University and University of Texas Health Science Center, respectively. He also holds a Master of Arts in Historical Studies from Norwich University Military College of Vermont. He earned his Doctorate in Education (Health Education focus) from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, Kirksville, Missouri. Prior to commissioning into Active Duty as a Captain in the US Air Force Biomedical Science Corps where he served as Chief of Medical Intelligence, he worked in several institutions and medical facilities including Baylor College of Medicine, the USDA WIC nutrition program for the city of Houston, Texas, and the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He also worked in Civil Service for U.S Navy Medicine. He has taught in various fields of public health sciences at Northeastern University, Rutgers University, Cornell University, and the University of London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. His research interests focus on cultural competency and diversity in public health education & promotion practices, international health (Middle East/North Africa emphasis), public health nutrition, medical humanities, obesity interventions, social justice in public health, and global health issues. He has published over 75 manuscripts in several peer-reviewed journals on topics covering public health historiography, history of preventive medicine, preventive nutrition, international health, global health, nutrition education, public health nutrition, health education/health promotion, and cultural competency in health education. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition.
